Motorcycle racing: transponders in MotoGP, motocross and enduro—and where to mount them

A motorcycle presents one of the toughest environments for race timing: a metal frame and fork, vibration, mud, water and high speed. That is why transponder technology is used so extensively in motorcycle racing.
MotoGP: loops and transponders
In MotoGP, motorcycles carry transponders and their times are recorded as they cross timing loops embedded in the track, much like cars. Tissot is the championship’s official timekeeper. How Formula 1 timing works explains how a loop and decoder operate.
Enduro: mandatory transponders
Under the FIM Enduro rules, transponder timing is mandatory and the rider is responsible for the transponder. The rider receives it against a deposit during administrative checks, and a technical official will reject a motorcycle without a correctly positioned, rigid mounting bracket. The transponder must be mounted in the position and orientation specified in the timekeepers’ instructions. Cable ties are the minimum requirement, while a screw or rivet is ideal; hook-and-loop fastener or adhesive alone is not accepted. Why chip placement matters
Metal detunes the chip’s antenna, mud and water attenuate radio waves, and carbon fibre behaves similarly to metal. The chip should therefore be installed in the correct orientation, away from metal, with no metal or mud directly in front of it. Backup in case a chip is lost
A transponder can be lost or damaged. Official events therefore use a backup timing system, which we discuss in Backup race timing: why you need it. At smaller events, manually recording each passage in an app is sufficient as an emergency procedure.
What this means for an organizer
If you organize a cross-country race or local enduro, you do not have to follow FIM rules. Choose the precision to suit the event: whole seconds for circuit racing and hundredths for special tests. See Timekeeping standards: a comparison across sports for an overview.
