In short
- The first Ironman was held on February 18, 1978, on the island of Oahu. Since 1981, the race in Hawaii has generally been held in Kona on the island of Hawaii, with exceptions including the cancellation of the 2020 edition and the move to St. George in 2021.
- The course consists of a 3.8 km (2.4-mile) swim, a 180 km (112-mile) bike ride and a marathon of 42.2 km (26.2 miles)—with common time limits of 2 hours 20 minutes for the swim, 10 to 10.5 hours from the start to complete the bike leg and 16 to 17 hours for the entire event.
- As of 2024, Sam Laidlow holds the bike course record at 3:57:22, while Sam Askey-Doran holds the swim course record at 45:43.
- The event and its conditions vary from year to year, so the precise time limits are always set out in the athlete guide for the relevant edition.
Ironman Hawaii is to triathlon what the marathon is to running: a test recognized even by people who do not otherwise follow the sport.
From Oahu to Kona
The first Ironman was held on February 18, 1978, on the island of Oahu. The event later moved, and since 1981 the World Championship has generally taken place in Kona on the island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island, although it has occasionally been relocated or not held at all. The 2020 edition was cancelled because of the pandemic, the 2021 edition was held in St. George, Utah, and from 2023 through 2025 the men’s and women’s races were divided between Kona and Nice, France.
Three disciplines without a break
The course consists of a 3.8 km (2.4-mile) ocean swim, a 180 km (112-mile) bike ride and finally a marathon run over the exact distance of a traditional marathon: 42.2 km (26.2 miles). How a triathlon is timed, including its transition zones, is explained in Triathlon timing: a chip on the ankle.
Time limits
Commonly cited limits are approximately 2 hours 20 minutes for the swim, 10 to 10.5 hours from the start to finish the bike leg and 16 to 17 hours for the entire event—but these figures vary between editions and starting groups. The precise, binding limits are always specified in the athlete guide for the relevant edition, as with other long-distance endurance events. Learn more in Time limits at sporting events.
Current course records
As of 2024, Sam Laidlow holds the bike course record with a time of 3:57:22, while Sam Askey-Doran holds the swim course record with a time of 45:43. Course records have continued to improve over the years alongside advances in equipment and training.
What to take away
Even a smaller triathlon needs clear time limits and a way to time three disciplines seamlessly without a break. You can find a practical process in How to organize a race: timing and checklist, which can also be applied to a triathlon.
